Floyd Martin Goski passed away peacefully on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Chinook Hospice, Calgary, at the age of 88 years. After a few years of unrecognized and frustrating health issues, he is now at peace. A special thank you to the hospice staff during his final days.
Floyd is survived by four sisters, Frances (Petford) Hawthorne of Victoria, British Columbia, Vivian Meggeson of Regina, Saskatchewan, Eleanor (Lorrie) Simon of Regina, Saskatchewan, and Joyce M.F Wright of Calgary, Alberta; as well as nieces and nephews, Clifford, Brian, Allan, Donald Petford and Vicki Petford Anderson: Robert, Bruce, Linda, Kent, Reginald Meggeson, Diana Bahr and Kim Pederson: Simone and Jason Wright; as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Floyd was predeceased by his parents, Jennie and Martin Goski; an infant sister, Margaret Goski; niece, Gloria Meggeson; brothers-in-law, Victor Petford, Donald Hawthorne, Roy Simon, and Joseph Wright.
Floyd left Cedoux, Saskatchewan with his family as a youth and moved to Regina, Saskatchewan where after his schooling he became a dental technician, who took great pride in his career and carried on with that work when he moved to Calgary the first time. He was a steadfast bachelor all his life (maybe because of the four sisters), and had a very strong and years-long interest in thoroughbred horse racing, all sports, and his many friends. He played mens' softball for several years with the Regina Bronx. He later decided to follow his career and the horses to Calgary. After he retired as a dental technician, he moved to Edmonton, again to follow the horses, for several years before moving back to Calgary in 2016 for health reasons. Off and on through the years, he helped the horse trainers and owners in the care and conditioning of the animals and loved every minute of it. Of course, there was a lot of time spent at the race tracks too. We never heard much about the losses - only the wins. Floyd always kept himself in great physical shape and walked and walked. He felt it gave him a lot of independence and kept him in shape. He never looked his age, and still had a nice, darkish head of hair to the end.
The family wishes to extend special thanks for the wonderful friendships of the residents at the Shepherd's Care Home in Edmonton, and the Providence Care Centre in Calgary. Floyd cherished them. Also, a big thank you to the staff members who considered his needs, cared for him with smiles, generosity, and kindness, and caught onto his quiet humour. In days of old, Floyd enjoyed a good beer; so, his Calgary family toasted him with a favourite - "Black Label" - a sip for him and a small glass for us as he went on his final journey - a lovely memory. Peace be with you, our dear brother Floyd.
As Floyd wished, no funeral service will be held. In due course, he will rest with his parents in Regina. In memory of Floyd, any donations can be made; or a "hand up" be given to any charity which supports the homeless and others in urgent need, or to the individuals themselves.
