Zoi Poulos passed away peacefully at the age of 89, on the morning of Sunday, August 20, 2023. She was born on March 10, 1934, to Evangelos and Georgia Lianos in her beloved village of Grammatikou, Greece. Zoi would often speak fondly of her early life in the village, despite the tragedies of war, and would always say her life was good because she had a loving family.
Zoi remained in Greece with her six siblings, Calliope, Mayoula, George, Violetta, Christos, and her twin sister Olga, with whom she shared a special bond. Looking for adventure and opportunity, she made the brave decision to move to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with four of her siblings. There, she worked a fulfilling job in a hospital until she met the love of her life, Gus Poulos (Papathanassiou). They got married and moved to Golden, BC, to start a life together. Their love was an inspiration to the entire family, and they adored each other until the end. While there, they expanded their family with two beautiful children, Mary and Nick.
Together, they ran several successful businesses, including the Hilltop Café and the Golden Gate Motel.
In 1982, the family moved to Calgary. Zoi spent the rest of her years doing what she loved most, being a grandmother. She never missed an opportunity to spoil her grandchildren. Having Sunday dinners with the family brought her so much joy and happiness. She also loved tending to her incredible garden and going to the mall with her husband.
Zoi is survived by her husband, Gus Poulos, of 58 years; her daughter Mary (Apostolos); her son Nick (Tara); her grandchildren Ephrosyne, Kaia, Zoe, and Kosta; and her siblings Olga, George, Violetta, and Christos. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her parents Evangelos and Georgia Lianos, and her sisters Calliope and Mayoula.
Our lives will be forever filled with Zoi’s love and the memories she gave us. She will be missed dearly, and we feel incredibly grateful to have known her.
