On April 5, 2018 Witold, beloved husband of Maria Swianiewicz, passed away in Calgary, Alberta in his 88th year. Witold was born in 1930 in Wilno (Vilnius) Lithuania, of Polish parents. After WWII his mother and siblings relocated to Gdynia, Poland. Witold was accepted into the Polish Merchant Navy officers training college in his final year of high school. He became a sailor on the tall ship Dar Pomorza. On his first trip out of the country he jumped ship in Sweden and applied for political asylum. He then went to England where his father was living since the war. He went to Portsmouth College of technology in England and was then employed at Marconi. In England he met his future, Dutch, wife Maria and they immigrated to Canada, arriving in Calgary in 1961. He worked for Marconi in Calgary before going back to school to become a teacher. Witold taught at Bishop Grandin High School from 1966 to 1989, teaching electronics, building construction and mathematics. After retirement, Witold and Maria resided on the beautiful Gulf Island of Pender Island B.C., where they both worked on the translation of his father’s book, "In the Shadow of Katyn". The last year of his life he and his wife resided in Calgary. Witold is survived by his sisters Maria Nagiec of Olystyn, Poland and Bernadette Szeglowski of Cracow, Poland; wife and three children, Nick of Vancouver, Bernadette (Aaron) and Greg (Maria); and two grandchildren Anna and Ian, all of Calgary. He is predeceased by his brother Jerzy of Warsaw, Poland, and son George, of Calgary. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church (321 – 90 Avenue S.E.) on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at 11:00 am.
