William (Bill) Van der Straeten Obituary

Bill was born in Vancouver, BC and raised on Northeast Vancouver Island. His parents, George Van der Straeten and Kathleen Blackwell as well as his sister Jan Cocker shared a tight bond with one another.

As a youngster in Beaver Cove, one of the logging camps where he grew up, Bill enjoyed many happy times fishing and hunting, along with his dog, Scamp.

Bill attended Brentwood College, in Mill Bay, BC where one of his many achievements was playing tighthead prop in rugby and being selected for the “first 15’s ”.

One of Bill’s motto was  “A man’s reach should always exceed his grasp” and this was manifested throughout his life. His interests included renovations, cooking, traveling, Toastmasters, biking, hiking, skiing, swimming, and golfing.

Life was an adventure for Bill. After obtaining a Bachelor of Engineering Degree from the University of Calgary in 1974, Bill decided to pursue his career interests in Montreal, QC.

This is where he met Carmen, chatting over a pint of green beer, at a pub on St. Patrick’s Day in 1975!

Following a traditional Italian wedding in Montreal on November 24, 1979, Bill and Carmen moved to North Vancouver. Their family grew to four when Stephen and Daniel were born. The boys were a source of joy and pride for Bill.

Many winters were spent in arenas in Brandon, MB and Calgary, cheering for the boys during their hockey years.

Faith, spirituality, and volunteerism were an important part of Bill’s life. For many years, he and Carmen joined the Holy Spirit Marriage Preparation team and facilitated marriage preparation courses. Journeying with engaged couples and sharing with them the joys and challenges of married life brought us much pleasure and inspiration.

Recently, Bill helped out with the counting of collections at Holy Spirit church.

For 33 years, Bill and Carmen felt a deep sense of belonging within our Church family at Holy Spirit and for this, we are truly grateful.

As the years progressed, Bill and Carmen were blessed with three granddaughters, Lilly, Ellie and Charlotte.

He was an amazing grandpa! He loved reading to his granddaughters, taking them out for meals, attending their sporting events and giving them big hugs.

Bill will always be remembered for his warm smile, his generosity, kindness and willingness to give a helping hand - and of course his zest for life.

His memory will always be cherished and he will live forever in our hearts.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (10827 24 St SW) on Friday May 30, 2025 at 2:30pm with reception to follow in the Parish Hall.
