Violet Eleonore Basten

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my Mom, Violet Basten (nee Francis) on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at the age of 92 at Newport Harbour Care Centre Calgary, AB.

Violet was born on February 2, 1931, in Lahore.  She is survived by her daughter Marilyn (Patrick);  grandsons, Nathan (Erika), and Nicholas; her brother-in-law Edwin (Stella); and their children Ambereen (Lorne, Lexi and Michael), Oscar (Pavan, Arshaun), David (Haley), and Isabelle (Ron, Alyssa); as well as numerous nieces and nephews around the world. Violet is predeceased by her brothers, David, Joseph, Henry and Peter.

Violet attended Mary and Joseph convent school. She taught for a few years before deciding to attend nursing school. She excelled in her nursing career, first as a head nurse then becoming a private nurse. Violet loved to help others whether it was in a nursing capacity or volunteering with the Good Samaritan Society, the CWL or any other cause that needed her help. She was always an active member of her church. She always put others before herself. Her kind gentle heart will be missed by many.

The family would like to thank Dr Stinton and the nursing and care staff at Newport Harbour for the wonderful care they gave her over the past 17 months.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Ascension Catholic Parish (1100 Berkshire Blvd, Calgary) on Friday, November 3, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. with a viewing prior at 12:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. For those who are unable to attend, a recording of the Funeral Mass is available below. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Calgary Alzheimer’s Society is appreciated at www.alzheimercalgary.ca.
