Vernon Edward Mangatal Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Vernon a.k.a. Grandpa, at the age of 88 at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. He was surrounded by the love of his family and was ready to be at peace.

Born in Trinidad, Tobago, Vernon grew up with a strong spirit of service, helping his father with government policies and becoming well known in the local fishing community. At just the young age of 16, he made a pledge before God to never drink liquor, a promise he proudly kept for the rest of his life. His many journeys in life lead him to Venezuela, England, Ireland and other many islands before settling in Saskatchewan, Canada. He loved to travel!

Throughout his life, Vernon worked with the provincial government in Saskatchewan and was a pillar in every community he joined. He brought people together, advocated for change, and helped fundraise for community spaces like playgrounds and pools. He believed deeply in doing the right thing and loving others well. He had a strong sense of fairness.

Family was always at the center of his life. He helped to raise and guide his grandchildren. He instilled values that continue to guide his family today. His legacy now spans five generations, a rare and beautiful gift that his family will treasure forever.

Vernon loved to sing! Often breaking into songs by Elvis Presley (“Are You Lonesome Tonight”), Nat ‘King’ Cole (“Unforgettable” or “Little Christmas Tree”), or Bing Crosby (Don’t Fence Me In”) wherever he was; at home, in the car, or during family gatherings. And who could forget the birthday wishes he always ended with: "You look like a monkey and act like one too!" Always with a little smile and chuckle. These weren't just performances; they were his way of expressing joy, and they are now cherished memories that will remain stuck in our hearts forever.

He was predeceased by two of his children, his siblings, and his parents. He is survived by his wife, his loving children, and a large and loving family of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A significantly large family.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to those who played a special role in his care over the past years. Although he did not express it as often as he thought it, he was grateful for the time and attention that he received.

A Catholic priest administered his Last Rites on March 8. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service and his ashes will NOT be separated. The family has entrusted Simply Creations Funeral Services in Calgary with his care. His ashes will be returned home to Trinidad & Tobago to be rested in peace with his beloved father.

Revelation 21:4 - “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.”

Matthew 5:4 - “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you light a candle or listen to a song that reminds you of him and continue his legacy of love with those around you.

Forever bringing song into our lives,

The Mangatal Family
