Stavro Melathopoulos

Stavro Melathopoulos passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at the age of 85 years.

Stavro was born in Neo Manolada, Greece, where his family was resettled from Turkey in the 1920s. He immigrated to Calgary at the age of 14. His first job was at AB Cushing Mills and then he became a journeyman carpenter with his brother George (deceased). While working as a carpenter he completed his high school education. He gave up carpentry to attend SAIT and then the University of Utah, becoming a registered architect in 1967. He married Penelope Dourou in 1962 (divorced). His first major project as Stavro Melathopoulos Architect Ltd was Smugglers Inn (Calgary). Through the 1980s he designed numerous hotels (e.g., Saskatchewan River Crossing Motel) and commercial buildings (e.g., Sundance Mall, Banff) in the Canadian Rockies and beginning in the 1990s with Glenmore Christian Academy, he designed ten Calgary chartered schools.

Stavro was an avid back-country skier and mountain climber and summitting over 100 different peaks in the Canadian Rockies and in Greece. He was a strong advocate for the Calgary Greek Community, helping with the construction of Saint Demetrios Church, designing the Community Annex and serving as the President of the Greek Community.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter Barbara, grandson Alexander, his son Andony (Sarah Alford). He is survived by his sisters Zoe (Peter) Petropoulos and Voula Christopher, sister-in-law Fotini, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
