It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Scott Gourlay born to Eleanor ("Dick") and Robert ("Scotty") Gourlay. Scott will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Cindy; his son, Ivan; and his sisters, Mary (Steve) and Frances (Ron); his brother-in-law Josh; his sisters-in-law Cecile and Karen; and his first wife, Lynn, with whom he shared an important chapter of his life.
He also leaves behind 14 nieces and nephews, whose lives brought him much pride. His legacy continues to grow through the generations. Mary and Steve are just a few months away from welcoming their fourth grandchild, bringing Scott's family to 30 great-nieces and great-nephews. Through Tom and Cecile's family, he is also survived by two great-great-nephews, while the Jones family has just welcomed Leanne and Josh's first great-granddaughter. Scott would have enjoyed seeing the family tree continue to branch and bloom.
Scott will also be fondly remembered by his many cousins, friends, neighbours, and everyone fortunate enough to know him. And, perhaps to the surprise of those who knew him best, he leaves behind one especially heartbroken companion: his beloved cat. Scott loved that cat with all his heart, a fact that always brought a smile to those around him. In addition, his Sister-in-Law's cat adored him to the point that everyone else was excluded if Scott was in the room. You could say he was the cat whisperer.
Awaiting Scott with open arms in Heaven are his beloved parents, Dick and Scotty Gourlay; his parents-in-law, Ray and Joan Whitehead; his siblings Judy, Leanne, and Tom; his brother-in-law Des; his nephew-in-law Marc; and two precious little ones, Samuel and Aibhlinn. Scott's life was woven into the fabric of a large and loving family. His story lives on in the memories shared around the kitchen tables, in laughter retold through family gatherings, and in the generations who will continue to know his name. Though he has left this earthly life, he remains forever a cherished husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, neighbour and friend.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St James Catholic Church (5504 – 20 Street SW Calgary) on Wednesday July 29, 2026 at 11:00 am. A recording of the Mass is below for those were unable to attend in person. A Graveside Service will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery.
"Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen."
