It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Sarah Elise Santiago Cowie. She left us far too soon on May 16, 2026, at the age of 16.
Born in Edmonton to Michael and Charlotte Cowie, Sarah was a beloved daughter and sister, a caring friend, and so much more. She was kind, caring, humble, and funny, and she lit up the lives of everyone who knew her. She will be forever missed.
Sarah was in Grade 11 at Ernest Manning High School and planned to study engineering in university.
Sarah was always active and excelled in everything she did. She started ballet when she was three, alongside her older sister Jade. Sarah danced for five years and competed in ballet in her last year of dance. After ballet, she began Taekwondo, reaching the rank of red stripe before COVID put a halt to sports. When sports started again in 2021, Sarah and her younger brother Lucas decided to try soccer. They both joined Calgary Rangers in the fall of 2021, and Sarah discovered her true passion.
A skilled and passionate soccer player, Sarah joined New Frontier Soccer Club in 2025, continuing her soccer journey with the SC 2010 Girls (Desai) team. She was a caring teammate who brought her quiet strength and fierce determination to the pitch, in every practice and game. Her love of soccer was evident every time she put on her cleats; she would light up with excitement, and we would see her utter joy and happiness in her eyes after every practice and game.
Sarah was also a talented artist who worked in everything from digital art to traditional watercolor to polymer clay. She liked to make art for people and give them as gifts, then was surprised to learn that people displayed them.
When she wasn’t playing soccer or working on her art, Sarah enjoyed spending time with her friends, watching anime, and annoying her older sister Jade and younger brother Lucas. She brought joy and laughter to everyone who knew her (including her sister and brother). She was always genuine and unapologetically herself. She made a positive impact on everyone’s lives just by being who she was.
A celebration of Sarah’s life will be held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., at Evan J. Strong Funeral Home North (3625 12 Street NE, Calgary).
Members of New Frontier and Calgary Rangers are encouraged to wear jerseys or club wear. Others are encouraged to wear blue, which was Sarah’s favorite color.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made to the scholarship fund for the scholarship being created by New Frontier in Sarah’s memory.
Sarah will forever be remembered for the joy and laughter she brought to the world, and the kindness and love she shared with everyone around her. We will miss her forever.
