Samuel Obroh Obituary

In Loving Memory of Catechist Samuel Iwrelogbo Obroh (December 1947 – 2023)

Catechist Samuel Iwrelogbo Obroh was born in December 1947 to the family of Pa Onoje Obroh and Madam Mary Orioruwoma in the serene community of Olomoro, in Oteri-Iyede, Isoko North, Delta State, Nigeria. He began his early education in his hometown and later attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Benin City, where he obtained his primary school certificate and received the sacrament of baptism and confirmation holding on to the name Patrick.

A passionate educator, he began teaching shortly after completing his primary education and later advanced his training at St. Thomas Teacher’s Training College, Ibusa, where he earned a Grade II Teachers Certificate. His deep commitment to learning led him to teach in various schools in Benin City, including the renowned Edo College. Driven by a lifelong pursuit of knowledge, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Public Administration from Abia State University.

Mr. Obroh served with distinction in the civil service, working for the Delta State Government. His exceptional work ethic and dedication to public service culminated in his appointment as Chief Statistician at the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board, a position he held until his retirement in 1999. Even in retirement, his commitment to serving humanity remained unwavering. He was appointed to the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal, where he served as a Justice of the Peace until 2023. An accomplished sportsman in his youth, he proudly represented the then Bendel State at the National Sports Festival held in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Beyond his professional achievements, Pa Obroh was a devout Catholic whose spiritual life reflected deep commitment and humility. He never missed attending daily masses due to his dedication and love for God. His great virtues in spirituality and generosity led to his nonstop monthly purchase of spiritual pathway booklet that contains daily mass readings, reflections and catholic prayers with his pension money, distributed among people to improve individual and collective faith. As an active member of the Legion of Mary and a dedicated Catholic, he attended the Emmaus School of Evangelization in Issele-Uku, Delta State sponsored by the Parish, and upon completion, was appointed Catechist at St. John Mary Vianney Catholic Church, Asaba. There, he diligently catechized and prepared children for the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation, making the Easter Triduum a particularly joyful and significant period each year. His deep love for Mother Mary was so deep that on his sick bed his last request was the statue of our Mother Mary before his speech went off.

Affectionately known as “Pman” by his children, he was a devoted husband, a loving father, an inspiring educator, and a disciplined yet compassionate man. He lived by example generous in spirit and unwavering in faith. His favorite exhortation, “Pray Until Something Happens (PUSH),” “It is not over until it is over” reflected his belief in the power of persistent prayer and trust in God’s divine timing. He was a man of charity, humility, and hope, who frequently spent time in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament and continuously shared the gospel in both word and deed.

His legacy of faith, service, education, and integrity lives on in the lives he touched. He ensured that all his children received a solid education and instilled in them values of prayer, humility, and kindness.

Adieu, Daddy. Rest peacefully in the Lord's embrace until we meet again to part no more.

May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church  (1414 Shawnessy Blvd SW, Calgary, AB T2Y 2L7) on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 1:00 pm.
