Roy Rutka Obituary

Roy Nicholas Rutka, 75, of Waterloo, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 18, 2021 in Calgary, Alberta.

Roy was born in Oshawa, Ontario to Nicholas and Ellen Rutka on November 18, 1945.  He attended high school at Humberside Collegiate in Toronto.  He went on to earn a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Engineering from the University of Waterloo.  He worked as a Geotechnical Engineer for Dominion Soils Investigations for several years, before striking out on his own and founding his own firm until he retired.

Roy was predeceased by his loving wife Margaret Anne-Marie Rutka and his parents, Nicholas & Ellen Rutka.

Roy is survived by his daughters Colleen Parks (Ryan) and Candace Rutka-Welch (Alex), his son Douglas, Rutka (Olivia), his grandchildren Haley, Kalan, Lawson, Daisy and by his brother Kenneth Rutka and his sister Sharon Rutka.

Roy loved many things; classic rock and roll, the history and geography of Canada, all animals, Tim Horton’s coffee (black, two sweetener, double-cupped please), long drives in the country (to nowhere in particular), Oktoberfest, random trivia, and most importantly his loving wife, children, and dear grandchildren.

The family would like to thank and express their gratitude to the following people: The Shewchuk/Eddy family for extending years of love and support to Roy, Anne-Marie and their children, the extended family in Oshawa for always making Roy feel at home, the Parks family in Oshawa for always making Roy and Anne-Marie feel like family, and lastly Rick Courtois in Waterloo who was both friend and financial advisor to the very end.

Due to COVID restrictions, formal memorial services will not be held at this time. The family is at peace knowing that Roy and Anne-Marie are together again. Roy and Anne-Marie always spoke fondly of their trip to the Rocky Mountains. One of their favourite places was Yoho National Park and the falls. When travel restrictions are lifted and his children can unite, we will pay tribute to them there.

Memorial donations may be made to the Tim Horton’s Summer Camp. Donations can be made using the following link :

Roy loved Tim Horton’s and enjoyed sending his own children to camp for long stretches of time, so this seems fitting. Colleen, Candace, Douglas and their families would like to thank everyone for your ongoing love and support.
