Robert "Bob" Theodore Engel Obituary

Bob was born October 1, 1943, and went home to be with the Lord on September 13, 2025.

Bob leaves behind wife Esther (nee Neufeld), daughter Mellissa (Jim), and son Jason, as well as grandsons William, Aidan and Caelan, and granddaughters Melody (Aaron) and Elizabeth (Darcy) and their families. He is also survived by his three brothers, Victor (Elma), Harvey (Marion) and Albert (Laura), and their families, brother-in-law Bill Silversides and family, and a large extended family on the Neufeld side.

Born on the family homestead near Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Bob learned to work the land at a young age. Bob was an excellent student and was the first in his family to go to University, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Saskatchewan in 1965. After graduation, he got his dream job working for John Deere and toured all over the Western provinces and states helping farmers fix equipment. In his career he designed farming equipment for Massey Ferguson and then later went on to work as a Project Manager with Dominion Bridge.

Bob married Esther Neufeld in Swift Current in 1970. They moved to Calgary in 1973 to start their life as a family. They settled in Lake Bonavista and kept the same house for 50 years.

Bob loved to travel and was a proud member of the “All 50 States club," together with Esther. He truly enjoyed driving, undertaking trips to Alaska (before the highway was improved), all across Canada and all over Mexico and Europe. He was an early Disneyland enthusiast and drove the family to California many times, in later years including his grandchildren. He took many holidays to Arizona, Las Vegas, Oregon, and in later years really enjoyed Mexican All-Inclusives.

An excellent builder and handyman, Bob often found solutions to seemingly impossible problems long before the advent of YouTube. Family, friends and neighbours frequently sought his advice on car repairs or purchases. He could identify any car on sight - year, make, model. He was blessed with an amazing memory and an exceptional mathematical mind!

In 1986, Bob had a pituitary tumor, which caused some permanent health issues and led to early retirement, however he continued to farm part time in Saskatchewan until he retired from active participation in 2007.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the staff of Age Care Glenmore for their dedicated care to Bob in the final two years of his life. And a huge thanks to Mom (Esther) for her tireless devotion to Dad through the years, but especially since his stroke in June of 2023.

A memorial service will be planned for Bob in the future, date and time to be announced.

Donations in Bob’s memory can be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada at www.heartandstroke.ca.
