Robert (Bob) William Grindrod

Bob passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Dulcina Hospice in Calgary at age 71.

Bob is remembered by Anne, his loving wife of 46 years, mom Ruth, and siblings Rick (Mara) and Lisa. He was a proud dad to Kelly (David) of Waterloo, Lynn (John) deJong of Calgary, and John (Aya) of Kobe, Japan. He was devoted to his grandchildren Orin, Brynn, Rowan, Alya and Kallea. Bob was recently predeceased by his dad Jack.

Bob was an adventurer. He was most at home in the Rockies, having spent his childhood moving between Jasper, Kamloops and Edmonton. He skied out of helicopters, biked the highway between Jasper and Banff, and worked everywhere from Russia and Venezuela to Oman and the Arctic Circle.

Bob was immensely curious about the world, ever ready to start a conversation and always with a book or two at hand. He instilled in his family the wisdom that every road trip must start at the break of dawn with a coffee, CBC radio and a large collection of 60s and 70s folk rock. He also tried to teach his kids to be early for anything in life but that lesson never stuck (sorry Dad!)

To say Bob was proud of his five grandkids is an understatement. He was heartbroken to be leaving them early but made sure they had his support to head off on their own adventures. He believed these happy, kind, whip-smart children would be his greatest legacy.

Thank you to Dr. Cerquozzi and the hematology team at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre who gave Bob the gift of time. And thank you to his friends and neighbours who offered Bob and Anne so much support these last months.

Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services North (3625-12th Street NE, Calgary) on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m., with a reception to follow. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream link will be available below.
