Robert Comer Obituary

With sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Bob Comer. Bob is lovingly remembered by his sister Peg Bateman; daughters Pat (Mike Bourns) and Barbara Kloos; sons Ken (Susan Johnston) and Gordon (Ron Lascano); son-in-law Greg Major; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife and best friend Margaret; his parents Wilfred and Constance of Saskatoon; his youngest daughter Gail (Greg Major); son-in-law Erwin Kloos (Barbara); and grandson Dustin.

Bob was born and raised in Saskatoon and graduated in physics from the University of Saskatchewan. A professional geophysicist, he joined Shell and worked on seismic crews in various towns in Alberta and Saskatchewan and in the Calgary, Regina, and Edmonton offices. Subsequently, he was a consultant for 30 years as a partner in Comer and Wilson in Calgary. Bob and Marg travelled a great deal for Bob’s work, including China, Houston, Pakistan, and Vancouver.

He was very active in scientific associations, even after he retired. Bob served as president of the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and was awarded their Meritorious Service Award and Honorary Membership, of which he was very proud. He served on many committees of APEGGA (the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists, and Physicists of Alberta) and served a three-year term on their Council. For five years Bob represented APEGGA on the Canadian Council of Professional Geoscientists and served as their Secretary-Treasurer.

Bob loved singing and sang for many years with the Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and the Parkdale United Church Choir. He was an excellent bridge player and played with the University Heights Mens Duplicate Bridge Club for some 40 years. Bob and Marg golfed at the Calgary Elks Golf Club. Bob met Marg in High River in 1954 at a wedding reception and they married in 1955. They spent 61 happy years together raising their large family, building a cabin on Lake Windermere with the Jamiesons, and spending time with friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Bob's name to the charity of your choice.
