With faith in the Resurrection and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Rita, who passed away peacefully in Calgary at the age of 97.
Born in Vancouver, Rita lived a long and grace-filled life rooted in faith, devotion to family, and quiet service to others. Her greatest joy was the family she nurtured and loved so completely. As the mother of nine children, she created a home filled with warmth, prayer, laughter, joy, and unwavering support. Her legacy lives on through her children, 47 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and all those who were blessed to experience her kindness and loving spirit.
Faith was the foundation of Rita's life. She lived with a deep trust in God and a tender devotion to the Blessed Mother. Her love for the Church and religious life was evident in her faithful participation in daily Mass, her prayer of the Rosary, and her generous sharing of her faith whenever she was called upon to give a talk. She held a profound love and respect for Priests, Deacons, Sisters, and all Religious, welcoming and supporting them throughout her life.
Rita will be remembered for her strength, wisdom, humility, compassion, and generosity. She was a gifted storyteller, a lifelong learner, and a playful spirit who delighted in games, adventure, and time spent with those she loved. Her family was her pride and purpose, and through her example she taught the enduring values of faith, resilience, gratitude, forgiveness, and love.
Though her passing saddens our hearts, we take comfort in knowing that she lived a full and meaningful life and is now at peace. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
Rita was predeceased by her beloved husband, Michael, and her sons, John and Joseph.
A Prayer Service will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral (219 – 18 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, May 31, at 6:30 pm
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Cathedral (219 – 18 Avenue SW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, June 1, at 10:00 am, with a reception to follow in the St. Mary's Parish Hall. A recording of the service is available below.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who cared for and supported Rita throughout her life. In keeping with her generous spirit, and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice that honours Rita’s faith-filled life.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
