It is with deep love and sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend, Alfred. Alfred Lamouche was 87 years old and lived a full and rich life.
Alfred was born to John Gladue Lamouche and Isabbel Sawan on June 17, 1938, in Atikameksheng Anishnawbek. He lived with his parents and grandparents until 1959, when he moved to the Provincial Training School (Michener Centre) in Red Deer. In 1985, Alfred moved to Calgary to join the L’Arche Community, where he became a cherished member.
As one of the most senior community members, Alfred’s presence was a quiet but steady thread in the fabric of the community. He had a gentle spirit and an abundance of love, especially for animals and children, who always seemed drawn to his warmth and kindness. Over the years, Alfred touched the lives of hundreds of people, showing us how to live with gentleness and kindness.
In recent years, his love of making birdhouses alongside Reg, reflected his patient spirit and the care he put into everything he did. Those little homes for birds will always remind us of the big home he helped create here with us.
Over the years, Alfred also embraced his Indigenous heritage with grace and pride, and we were honoured to walk alongside him as he explored his identity, history, and culture.
Alfred is survived by his sister Gertrude Gladue (Edmonton) and by his fellow community members in L’Arche. Besides his parents and grandparents, he was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Flamont, and brother, Philip Gladue. Alfred loved his family, always appreciating time with them and often sharing about them with others.
As we grieve, we also give thanks - for Alfred’s life, his legacy, and the many ways he shaped our lives. His absence is felt deeply, but so is his lasting presence.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 15, 2025, at 11:00am, at St. Anthony's Parish, (5340 4 Street SW, Calgary, Alberta). A Reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
