Peter Moore Obituary

Thursday July 7th, 1932, was a beautiful summer day in Dublin. The sun was bright in the sky, and the city was warm; the daytime high was 20 C with no rain in the forecast. On this day, Annie Moore brought the first of her eight children into the world; her first son, she named him Peter Lauri.  He was healthy baby boy and grew quickly into a strong and capable young man.  He would become big brother to seven siblings, Jack, Liam Gracie, Kathleen, Denis, Robert and Pat.  Peter loved sports, he played football and rugby in Ireland and loved cycling with his mates.  Peter met Clare in the early 50s in Dublin before he moved to the US in 1955. He joined the US Army and completed basic training at Ft. Dix, NJ in May 1956 where he became an MP. His service as an officer took him to Germany and Austria. He was honorably discharged in 1958 and lived in Rochester, NY.  While he was serving, Clare emigrated to Canada and lived in Toronto.  Upon leaving the army, Peter began to court her seriously.  Peter and Clare were engaged on Christmas Eve, 1959 and were married the following May 1960, in Toronto.  Their first three daughters were born in Rochester in 1961, 1962 and 1964.  Peter and Clare went on to grow their family to six daughters. Over the next 60 years, the life of Peter evolved with new beginnings in new cities, new jobs, sons-in-law, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Peter and Clare retired to a cheerful life in the mid-1990s in Scenic Acres in Calgary and enjoyed many happy and content years together.  In their retirement, they traveled home to Dublin and to London, visited Italy and cruised the Mediterranean, but their favorite spots were closer to home.  On a random Tuesday, or Wednesday, or Thursday they would ‘jump in the car and head to the mountains.’  They LOVED their Rockies, always in awe of their majesty and natural beauty.  Very often Peter and Clare would also pack the car and head for the wild west coast.  As kids, they introduced us to the wild beauty of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, also known as Greenpoint, Long Beach, Wick, Middle Beach, Ukee and Tofino.  They couldn’t stay away from it, and as adult children, neither can we.

On April 19th, 2024, at the age of 91, Peter went home to heaven to join his brothers Jack and Denis, his sisters Gracie and Kathleen and his parents John and Annie.  We know there was a great celebration upon his arrival.  Peter was cherished by his family.  Those yet to make the journey are relieved that his illness and suffering is over.  No more pain Peter, Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle - you’re free.

Peter lived a long, full and beautiful life. His soft heart and kindness will be missed by all of us, but we will carry him in our hearts until we meet again. We will remember him for so many things. James Last and Benny Goodman on the turntable, Arsenal FBC on the TV, blackcurrant hard candies in the glovebox, BC cherries from roadside fruit stands, the Jaguar XJ12, Faulty Towers and the antics John Cleese and Manuel, whistling from anywhere in the house, songs with lyrics comprised only of la, la, la., Sunday trips to Dairy Queen and to watch the planes land, flying high on the swings at Confederation Park, grandchildren on his shoulders and by the hand, his love of dessert, his true and abiding, forever love of his darling Clare, and his deep love for all of us.  Dad, you saw the opportunities for your daughters in Canada and you moved us here.  You supported us, loved us and challenged us.  You were a fabulous grandpa, a kind, strong, strong-minded husband and provider, a fabulous dance partner, an amazing life partner, devoted husband, companion, and best friend to Mom. There is no one like you.

We love you

Farewell for now until we meet again.
