It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Panagiota Vlahakos Gianakoulas on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the age of 89 years.
Panagiota was born on January 1, 1936, in Gytheio, Lakonia, Greece. She immigrated to Canada at a young age, where she built a beautiful life and met her beloved husband, Apostolos. Panagiota has a deep love for her family and took great joy in caring for them – especially through her baking. She was known for making massive batches of traditional Greek desserts, always with the goal of bringing happiness to her loved ones. Her home was filled with warmth, delicious smells, and an open door for anyone who needed comfort. Panagiota was incredibly talented: a gifted bouzouki player, an amazing singer, and superb seamstress skills.
Panagiota is survived by her loving husband, Apostolos; her three children, Ellen (Archie), Peter, and Jim; her cherished grandchildren, Effie, Costa and Katy (Liam). She is also survived by her sister-in-law Afroditi and her children, Peter, Ellen and Georgia; her niece Jenny from Winnipeg, MB; her brother Theodore and his children from Gytheio Lakonia, Greece. Panagiota is predeceased by her parents Demetrios and Eugenia from Gytheio, Lakonia; and her brother Peter, his wife Aliki and their children, Jimmy and George Vlahakos.
Funeral Service will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Friday, June 27, 2025 at 10:00 am. Graveside service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to return to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church for a reception to celebrate Panagiota’s life.
