Norton Roald Mellom

Norton Mellom passed on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the age of 98. Norton was born on the family homestead near Northgate, Saskatchewan on November 25, 1926, to Selma Mellom (nee. Kopperud) and Julius O. Mellom. Norton attended the schools at Scout Hill and Oxbow. After working in Eastern Canada, he married Ruby Mellom (nee. Ferris) in 1954 and they returned to Oxbow to raise their family.  

Norton was active in the South Eastern Saskatchewan community, a talented pool shark at the local Oxbow pool hall and spent his career as a potato and grain Farmer. He later used those back and bicep muscles to carry his grandchildren around “like a sack of potatoes” much to their delight.  

Norton and Ruby moved to Calgary in 1989, enabling them to become actively involved grandparents. They settled in Bowness and Norton was a mainstay at the Bowness Legion and in the musical community. Many, many, many days were spent playing piano at Stampede events, in nursing homes across Calgary and at the numerous Legions in the Calgary area. When he was not playing piano, Norton was on the phone (which always rang busy), keeping up with everyone he knew. He was an enthusiastic storyteller. Norton also endlessly traveled until he literally could not, visiting family, cousins and relations across Canada and Continental US, Scotland, Norway, Papa New Guinea and Australia. He spent his retirement years, wintering in San Diego, California with his son and family, his summers and early autumns in his motorhome, helping out with Harvest in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Norton would briefly return to Calgary, just in time to pick Nanking cherries, crab apples and Saskatoons (his absolute favourite) and then hop back in the motorhome the latter half of September to connect with friends and play piano at Høstfest in Minot, North Dakota.  

Norton now joins his wife Ruby in Heaven. Left to mourn are his sister Audrey Wood, his daughter Leah East (Darryl), grandchildren, Tara (Colin), Robyn (AJ), great-grandchildren Juniper and Piper, his son, Gary Mellom (Linda), grandchildren Angela (Danny), Nicole (Adrian), Ryan (Julie) and great-grandchildren Michael, Tyler, Hailey, Noah, and Addie. He will also be missed by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family members. He is preceded in death by his mother, father, siblings, many relatives and friends.   

Norton’s family would like to immensely thank the Brentwood Care Centre, Calgary. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bowness Senior’s Centre, (6422- 35 Avenue NW, Calgary), on Saturday, March 22, 2025 from 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Family and friends are invited to share stories and lunch.
