It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nihal Seneviratne on Friday November 8, 2024, at the age of 88 years. He fought hard through a brief illness in the previous week and succumbed to it peacefully, surrounded by his family in his home.
He is survived by his wife Dula, his children Dihan (Nicole), Roshane (Charles) and Melanie as well as two granddaughters, Amber and Alyssa. He is also survived by two brothers, Jayantha (Bernie) and Clive.
Nihal was born in Sri Lanka in 1936, went to technical school in England, and travelled to many countries when younger. He met and married his first wife Nimali, had two children and immigrated to Calgary in 1972. His third child was born here in Calgary a few years later. He worked for Calgary Transit for many years and then as a businessman as he owned various hallmark and liquor stores over the years before his retirement. In his retirement, he met and married his second wife Dula.
Nihal worked hard to provide for his family and valued his catholic faith. He loved to dance, especially ballroom dancing and had a love of repairing old cars. Listening to music and watching hockey games were a favorite past-time in recent years.
The family would like to thank the staff at Unit 66 in South Calgary Health and the staff at AgeCare McKenzie Towne for their compassionate care of Nihal in the last week of his life.
A Funeral Mass and tributes will be held at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church (1600 Acadia Dr. SE) on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. A Reception will follow in the basement of the church.
If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Diabetes Society at diabetes.ca/donate.
