Mykola (Nick) was born in Zlobek Poland to parents Zena (Fedoruk) and Daniel Woron. Mykola is predeceased by his loving wife Paraskevia (Pearl), brother Alexander Woron and his son Walter Woron.
At the age of 15 Mykola left home to work for a farmer in Germany. During WWII he met the love of his life Paraskevia and after the war they married. While living in a displaced person’s camp in Germany, they welcomed their son Walter. They immigrated to Canada in 1949 and settled in the Lethbridge area, welcoming daughter Maria and later, after moving to Calgary, they welcomed daughter Zena.
Mykola retired from CPR after 36 years. Mykola’s passion was the knowledge that books bring and while in the camp in Germany he started a small collection of Ukrainian books. Mykola brought that passion and those books with him to Calgary where in 1958, he started a small library that was in the church basement of St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church (original church). That library is now located in St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Cultural Centre. What started out with a few books grew to well over 12,000 books today.
Over the years Mykola received many accolades and recognition for his work, achievements, and contributions to the Ukrainian community. His most prized achievement was in 2015 when they renamed St Vladimir’s Library to “Mykola Woron Library and Archives”. It is a thriving library today thanks to the contribution of many volunteers.
Mykola’s legacy lives on through his family of which he was very proud. He is lovingly remembered by his children Maria (Bob), Zena (Rod), Walter’s wife Joyce, his grandchildren Kevin (Marie), Cory (Charlene), Dan, Dave, Allen, Ken and great grandchildren Cooper, Brady, Eric and Veronica.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor (404 Meredith Road NE) on Friday, July 12, 2024, at 10:00 am. Graveside service to follow at Rocky View Garden of Peace Cemetery.
