Murray Adderley Obituary

Murray George Adderley, our beloved brother, uncle, great uncle and beacon of light and love, died peacefully on December 23, 2021 in Calgary, at the age of 60. His sisters Jackie, Susan and Yvonne were at his bedside as he was welcomed into the heavenly kingdom, and reunited with our parents Mary and Jack, and brother Terry. Born in Yellowknife on September 11, 1961 with Down Syndrome, it was suggested that Murray be institutionalized. Against this advice, Murray was wholly loved and given the same opportunities as the rest of our family. Our parents were his best advocates.

Murray attended Abe Miller School(YACL) in Yellowknife, and Winnifred Stewart School in Edmonton. He returned to the north and worked for Territorial Beverages, with his long time friend Bob, and was definitely known for his fierce loyalty to Pepsi Cola! Murray was also a Special Olympics athlete, proudly bringing home medals for swimming and bowling. Many knew Murray for his hometown antics when he was young- a curious, self determined young lad, who even managed to charm the Queen of England while she visited Yellowknife in the early 1970’s. He was in close proximity to her, as she walked through the doors of the Fraser Towers, and offered her a warm greeting of “Hi, Miss Queen.” HRH responded with a twinkle in her eye and a smile.

Murray later moved to Red Deer for more supportive opportunities to live independently. Through CARS Agency, and a loving, supportive home of 22 years with his second family, the Vanderburgts, he lived an active and vibrant life in Red Deer, supported by many caring and dedicated community support workers. As Murray grew into a kind, polite, humourous young man, he was loved by so many- as he loved so many. His outstretched hand to offer a handshake with the intro of “Hi, I’m Murray”, showed his kindness and acceptance to all he met. Murray had a deep love for music, which was his solace and comfort. His birthday was the highlight of the year- and he eagerly planned his next year’s party the day after his big day.

But, Murray’s greatest love was his family. He relished and treasured his frequent visits with his sisters and friends. Murray was like a pebble thrown into a lake. The lives he touched acted as ripples extending far beyond us. He had a pure and beautiful appreciation for life that surely enriched our lives as his family.

Murray is survived by sisters Jackie(Jim) Evans, Enderby, Susan(Ira) Franklin, Yellowknife, Yvonne(Brian) Dewar, Calgary, and loving nieces Teresa, Lisa, Leah, Steph, Andrea, Aryn, Kim, Katelyn, Ava, Elle, Reagan, Sophia, Skylar, and nephews Jordan, Chris, James, Benjamin, Avery and Liam.

“Dance with the angels and have a cool one with Jesus, Mur”.

Celebration(s) of Life to be held in Calgary and Yellowknife. His final resting place will be with his mom, dad and brother in Lakeview Cemetery.
