Mike passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre on February 3, 2026. He was a beloved husband, a devoted father, and an adoring grandfather.
Born in Red Deer, Alberta, on May 2, 1940, Mike was the oldest son of eight children. His family later moved to Maple Creek, Saskatchewan, where he did all his schooling and where he met his soon-to-be wife, Shirley. After a brief time at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta, and then Campion College in Regina, Saskatchewan, he decided academia was not for him. Back in Maple Creek, Mike took a job with CP Rail in the Signal Department in 1960. Mike and Shirley married in 1963 and made their first home in Field, BC. Still with CP Rail, Mike moved his young family to Calgary in 1966. Mike worked the CP rail line throughout Alberta and BC for the next 20 years. His experience with railway signals was just what the City of Calgary needed for its new light rail transit project, and in 1980 Mike began working on what has since become Calgary’s premier public transit system. Mike retired from the City of Calgary in 2003. After his retirement, Mike and Shirley traveled extensively, including two trips to Ireland to explore his Irish roots. Mike enjoyed curling and slo-pitch baseball. He sang in his church choir, and he loved playing cards. He possessed a strong sense of family and a strong work ethic, two traits he has passed on to his children. Mike was patient and made friends easily. His easy smile and good humour will be missed.
Mike is survived by his wife Shirley, his children Douglas, Colleen (Gary), Sean (Heather), his granddaughter Morgan, his sister Helen, and his brothers Kevin and Dan.

And I found with the break of dawn
You and the song had gone
But the melody lingers on”
--Irving Berlin
