Melvin Lloyd Johnson of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Friday, at the age of 82 years.
Mel was born in Hanley, Saskatchewan, on June 8, 1943. Mel grew up on the family farm, where he developed a strong work ethic and a deep appreciation for rural life. In 1960, he moved to Calgary, Alberta, where he attended Western Canada High School. He played and coached hockey in Saskatchewan. It was during these formative years that Mel began building the foundation for the life he would go on to create.
He graduated from SAIT in 1968 as a mechanic and transmission specialist. He worked at various transmission shops in Calgary for several years, and at one time owned his own business.
He was always very good at fixing vehicles, helping family and friends in doing so, and giving good mechanical advice. Mel also valued time spent with friends and neighbours, always ready with a story or a helping hand. He also enjoyed watching a lot of hockey on TV.
Mel is survived by his brother, Wilf, his daughter Nikki Pratt (Graham), son Caley Johnson (Kristy), and their mother, Barbara Haig.
He is also survived by his six grandchildren, Lachlan, Lauren, Leven, Cayto, Luke, and Leia, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Eileen and Richard Johnson, and stepfather, Ferdie Johnson; brother and sister-in-law Les and Jill Johnson, sister and brother-in-law Louise and John Thiessen, and his wife, Francis Kryszpin.
Mel will be remembered for his steady presence, his kind heart, and his unwavering dedication to those he loved. His legacy lives on through his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life will be held at Evan J Strong Funeral Home (North Location) 3625 12 Street N.E. on Friday, April 3, 2026 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
