Maurice Azzam Obituary

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23).

With the love and compassion that always shone from his heart, Maurice Iskandar Azzam fell asleep peacefully in our Lord’s hands on Monday May 11, 2020.  He was surrounded by his beloved family as he departed.

Maurice was born in Palestine, the son of the late Alexander and Lynda. He graduated from Cairo University in Egypt in 1966, having studied Petroleum Engineering, and spent some of his early years in Lebanon.

Maurice is survived by Salwa Azzam, nee Habib Iksander Boustan, his devoted and loving wife for the last 51 years; his daughter Yvonne (Paul); and his sons Michael (Deena) and Paul (Anna).  He is beloved “Giddo” to his grandchildren Danielle, Alexandra, Emma, Grace and Andrew. Maurice is also survived by his sister Renée; his brothers Victor (Suzanna) and Edouard (Sonia); and his sisters-in-law, Salwa, Agness, Magda, Mona, Mary (Lawrence), and Nadia (Adib).  He was predeceased by his brothers Charles and Emile to whom he brought peace and solace in their final earthly journey.

He immigrated to Canada in 1967, and spent all his career in the Oil and Gas business.  Maurice lived in Calgary with Salwa and was known for serving his community and Church with humility and discretion.  He cherished his many cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.   He brought joy to so many; and his home was an open door to relatives and friends alike, sharing bread together.  He was a wise man, full of kindness Maurice was generous, humble, respectful, a man of his word, knowledgeable, educated,  someone you can count on, and most of all, a man of God.  May his loving memory be eternal!

Maurice’s family wishes to express their profound gratitude to Dr. Hannan Bassyouni who had done wonders to keep him comfortable. Also to Dr. William Emery, Dr. Aspinall, the palliative care team and the many nurses for their comforting care.

Maurice Rest In Peace in God’s arms.  We love you and will miss you forever.

Due to the ongoing public health concern, the funeral will be private and no reception will take place.

In lieu of flowers if you wish, donation can be made to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.
