Mary Pogue Obituary

Mary Jane Pogue (nee Hurlbut) died peacefully with family at Wentworth Manor on the morning of Saturday, January 28, 2023.

Mary Jane was born in Toronto and raised in Preston, ON. After becoming a Registered Nurse, she met Douglas Pogue and moved to Calgary in the 1960s, where they were married. She worked in the operating room at the Colonel Belcher Hospital. Later, Mary Jane was a homemaker and raised two sons and a daughter. Mary Jane’s husband passed away in 1992; she never remarried.

Outside of Mary Jane’s devotion to her family, she loved tennis. She played regularly at the Glencoe for 40 years with her sister and best friend, Patricia, and their buddies. She followed professional tennis, always cheering for Roger Federer. She loved Maui, morning crossword puzzles, and afternoon happy hour with family, friends, and neighbours. She was a regular parishioner at St. Mary’s Cathedral.

Mary Jane leaves behind her two sons, Michael (Sayuri) and Tim (Leslie); her daughter, Karen; her grandchildren, Kirsten, Douglas, Christian, and Tai; her brothers-in-law, William (Bill) Fofonove, Patrick Osborn and Don Pogue; her sisters-in-law, Barbara Hurlbut, Carol Pogue, and Gwen Pogue; her nieces and nephews, Jill, Glenn, Theresa, Colleen, Jason, Jodi, Jennifer, John, Stephen, Carolyn, Teresa, and Anton; and extended family members and friends.

Mary Jane is predeceased by her husband, Doug; her mother, Eileen Hurlbut; her sisters, Patricia Fofonove and Connie Osborn; her brother, Jack Hurlbut; her niece, Diane Beach (nee Osborn); her nephew, Paul Fofonove; her parents-in-law, Gordon and Elsie Pogue ; and her brother-in-law, Dave Pogue.

Thank you to Father Julian Studden and the doctors and staff at Wentworth Manor.

As per Mary Jane’s wishes, there will be no service. An inurnment is planned for early Spring.

Donations in memoriam can be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Calgary and the Brenda Strafford Foundation.

Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8
To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven:

A time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up;

A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away;

A time to rend and a time to sew; a time to keep silence and a time to speak;

A time to love and a time to hate; a time of war and a time of peace.
