Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Marjorie (Marge) Ellen Duncan.

Marge was born in Moncton, New Brunswick, and always considered herself an “east-coast girl” at heart. Growing up with six sisters and six brothers, Marge developed a strong and feisty presence within the family. From her earliest years, Marge was an avid and accomplished cook and baker. She would wake-up daily at 4:00 am to bake for her father, a train engineer for CP Railway. Eventually, Marge and her sister, Rose, moved to Calgary, Alberta, where Marge met and married Dr. James Roger Duncan (Jim). They had three children whom they adored; Laura June Duncan (Broadbent), James Dixon Duncan, and Dawn Ellen Duncan (Verheylewegen).

Marge and Jim were well-traveled, which allowed Marge to continue pursuing her cooking passion by attending international cooking schools and classes in France and Italy. Marge’s love of cooking eventually led her to open a successful catering company in the 1970s and she soon became one of the most sought-after caterers in Calgary. Marge's industrious and hardworking nature resulted in her company expanding, and throughout her career, she owned and operated two gourmet food businesses and co-authored a cookbook with her eldest daughter, Laura.

Marge's dedicated work ethic, strong will, and determination have been an inspiration to many. Her vibrant and charismatic personality, wonderful sense of humour, and ability to make magical moments happen, will be remembered by everyone who knew her.

Marge is survived by her loving and devoted husband, James, and their three children; Laura (Jim), Jamie, and Dawn (Eric). Marge also leaves behind her treasured grandchildren; Emily Dodd (Josh), Gillian Broadbent (Dan), Jonathan Broadbent (Christine), and Hugh Verheylewegen. She leaves behind her three precious great-grandchildren whom she was besotted with. She is also survived by three of her amazingly wonderful sisters; Rose Harrison, Betty (Doug) Deware, Sandy Harrison and numerous loved nieces and nephews. Marge will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate enough to know her. A celebration will be held in Marge's honor at a later date when gatherings can be held safely.
