Maria was born in Krywycia, Ukraine on July 3, 1941. The youngest child of Michael and Ksenia Witek and had an older sister Stephania. The family moved to Poland in 1947 where she finished middle school and had dreams of becoming a nurse. During her childhood, Maria had rheumatic fever which resulted in lifelong health effects, but that did not stop her from working on the family farm, tending to animals and growing vegetables.
In the 1960’s, she came to Canada to live with her Uncle Joe and Aunt Ann. While staying with them, Maria met her future husband Stanley. They married in 1966. Their son Peter (Angela) was born in 1969 and daughter Patricia (Mason) in 1972. Maria brought her parents to Canada in 1978. Shortly afterwards, she brought Stephania and her family to live with her as well. For a short time, all 3 families lived in the same home.
Maria was predeceased by Stanley in 1985, leaving her with 2 young kids to raise. She made the challenges look easy as she took them all in stride, showing us all just how strong and independent she had become. Maria took care of her parents until their passing in 1999 and 2011. She was thrilled with the birth of her grandson Andrew in 2000. Maria’s garden and home were her pride and joy. She was always willing to share in the bounty of her garden with family, friends, neighbours and anyone who might ask.
In 2018 Maria suffered from a stroke which resulted in her moving to an assisted living facility. She remained very active participating in the provided activities and going out for daily walks in the community whenever the weather was nice. Maria enjoyed spending time outdoors and sitting in the sunshine. To all that met her and enjoyed her company, she was kind and gentle and incredibly generous. Maria will be missed by all who knew her.
A Private Funeral Mass will be held on March 25, 2021 at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church.
