Lucas (Luke) James Morrison

Luke (Lucas) James Morrison, a beloved husband and father who was a popular DJ before becoming an accomplished lawyer, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2026, in Canmore, at the age of 44 years old.

His death, at Canmore General Hospital, followed a sudden cerebral aneurysm. 

Luke was born in Edmonton, Alberta, and graduated from Ross Sheppard High School before attending the University of Alberta, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Political Science followed by his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) in 2008.

Luke built an exceptional career in energy law with Bennett Jones LLP in Calgary, where he practiced for nearly two decades. He was widely respected as one of Canada's leading energy lawyers, advising clients across both the renewable and conventional energy sectors. His practice focused on upstream and midstream oil and gas agreements, joint ventures and Indigenous partnerships and the commercial aspects of energy restructuring and insolvency.

His expertise earned him national recognition, including being named one of Canada's Top 40 Lawyers Under 40. Luke served on the Board of the Canadian Energy Law Foundation (CELF) and was a speaker for organizations including the World Petroleum Congress, the University of Calgary, the Petroleum Acquisition & Divestment Association, and the Canadian Bar Association.

Luke cared profoundly about creating opportunities for children and believed that education had the power to change lives. As chair of The Educational Partnership Foundation (TEPF), he helped advance literacy and skilled trades programs across Calgary communities.

Before—and occasionally during—his legal career, Luke was a professional DJ. He was a huge fan of house music and found immense joy in every aspect of it. Music was both a creative outlet and a way of bringing people together. Some of his happiest moments were spent discovering new tracks, creating mixes and, most of all, sharing them with others. A great source of pride for him was having a track played on the Pete Tong radio show and being called a “master editor.” He often tried to teach friends and colleagues how to DJ and use turntables after a few drinks were enjoyed.

A lifelong Edmonton Oilers fan, Luke's passion for hockey began in childhood and never faded. The Oilers' recent playoff runs became more than just games. They were a reason to gather with friends, reconnect with old ones, make new ones, and share in the excitement, hope (and heartbreak) that only sport can bring.

Despite his professional accomplishments and hobbies, Luke's greatest pride was his family.

He shared twenty-five wonderful years with the love of his life, Kathryn, building a life grounded in friendship, laughter, and unwavering love. Together they welcomed the greatest joy of their lives, their son, Jack. Luke often described waiting for Jack's arrival as "terrifyingly wonderful," and anyone who saw him with his son witnessed the depth of his devotion. Fatherhood was the role he cherished most. Whether it was conquering the biggest roller coaster in the park or diving headfirst into Jack's latest adventure, Luke was all in. He met every idea with boundless enthusiasm, endless creativity, and the kind of joyful commitment that made Jack believe anything was possible.

Luke will be remembered for his sense of humour, genuine kindness, and quiet professionalism—sometimes all at once. He approached life with thoughtfulness and authenticity. Whether preparing an elaborate meal, tending his garden, or negotiating a complex agreement, he simply wanted to do the very best he could and usually did.

One of Luke's greatest gifts was his ability to truly see people. From a young age, he made others feel heard, understood, and valued—a gift that left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. Whether a conversation lasted five minutes or five hours, people walked away feeling that Luke had genuinely listened. He had an uncommon way of making others feel important.

In addition to Kathryn and Jack, Luke’s survivors include his mother and stepfather, Judith and Rick Sokolowski; his sister and brother-in-law, Christal and Pierre Myner; his parents-in-law, Brian and Mary Jane Farrell; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Stephanie and Michael Thrasher; as well as extended family members, dear friends, his colleagues at Bennett Jones, and clients whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Luke was predeceased by his father, Jim Morrison.

Luke's legacy lives in the family he adored, the friendships he nurtured, the colleagues he valued, and the countless lives he touched through his generosity, integrity, and kindness.

A Celebration of Life will be planned in the fall.
