Lilien Dobish Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce that Lilien Dobish passed away peacefully in her home on September 25, 2025. Lilien was born in Wayne, Alberta on September 19, 1936, to Maria and Joseph Dobish, who were married on April 30, 1922. A few years after they were married, Mr. Dobish came to Canada. Five years later, in 1933, Mrs. Dobish immigrated to Canada, with their 2 daughters. The family was reunited and settled in Wayne, Alberta.

The Dobish's were part of an ethnic group known as the Carpathian Germans. After being blessed with another daughter - Lilien Henryete - being born in Canada - they moved to Midlandvale in January 1937 and then to Calgary in 1960.

Lilien enjoyed life on the farm and shared often how she enjoyed "milking the cows".

Lilien was a Teacher of Special Education and a Child Psychologist with the Calgary Catholic School Board. Until her passing, Lilien still communicated with students she had over the years, that made a point of keeping in touch.

Lilien was an accomplished seamstress; volunteering her time assembling and sewing costumes for the Young Canadians School of Performing Arts.

Lilien was an avid gardener, both indoors and out; her orchids, African violets and Christmas Cactus's were the envy of many - but typical Lilien - when you left her home after a visit, you were carrying one of these beautiful plants. Her lilies in her outdoor garden were magnificent in the beautiful spray of color and again, many other lily gardens were begun with slips from Lilien's garden

Lilien was an accomplished pianist and got great joy out of playing her piano.

Lilien was an amazing cook and baker and you could smell her bread baking a block away - and again, to those that lived close by there was always a fresh warm loaf of bread dropped off that wouldn't see the end of day. Her Rum Cakes were famous and you had to be 18+ to enjoy a piece or two!

Books! Books! And more Books! Lilien always had books to give away or lend; whether bestsellers, self-improvement or faith based. Every child Lilien knew, benefitted from the books in a little gift bag they would receive after a visit at Lilien's home or on special occasions...Lilien was an extremely generous person.

Lilien loved to entertain and hosted many sit-down dinners and luncheons - prearranged by Lilien with beautiful flowers on the tables and impeccable food and service - perfect and on pointe - every time.

Lilien was a dear friend to many; someone that could be trusted to keep to herself many personal stories and hurdles that the people who loved her were challenged by. We are all fortunate to have a Guardian Angel named "Lilien" and she will be sadly missed.

Lilien is was predeceased by her father Joseph, July 15,1963 at the age of 64 years, her mother Maria, June 13, 2001, at the age of 101 years, and her sister, Mary Beauchamp.  She is survived by her sister Julia Kinsley, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

A Funeral Mass will celebrated at St. Luke's Catholic Church (Corner of Northland and Northmount Drive NW) on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at 1:00 pm.
