Leo Sprinkhuysen Obituary

Leo was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands on October 7, 1934, the youngest of 8 children. He left the Netherlands in 1955 and immigrated to Canada. He lived and worked in Edmonton, Alberta before settling in Calgary, Alberta. He married Mary (Riet) van Delst in 1964, and they remained at each other’s side for the past 56 years. Together, they raised a family of four boys. Leo was a loving provider for his family, a dear husband, and a cherished father and grandfather or “Opa”. He worked at the University of Calgary Physical Plant for most of his career and was managing the planning department when he retired in 1994. Leo was instrumental in the development and construction of facilities for the 1988 Olympics, including the Olympic Oval. Leo always had a contagious love for sailing, an interest which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, whether he was cross-country skiing, camping, or hiking. Leo particularly liked going for walks in Baker Park along the Bow River in Calgary with his family and his dog. He enjoyed playing (and usually winning) bridge and chess, as well as building models, renovating the house, and expanding his own knowledge through reading and studying. Leo was someone who always preferred building or fixing things such as the garage, deck, washing machines, car engines, or even go-karts, rather than buying or replacing them. He was also an advocate for many causes that he passionately supported. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him and whose lives he touched.

Leo passed away peacefully at the Foothills hospital on February 19, 2021, shortly after being diagnosed with advanced-stage lung cancer. He will be remembered by his wife Mary and their four sons Anthony, Spencer, Robert, John, and their families—including his 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A prayer service will be held on March 3rd at St. Peter’s Church in Calgary and the Funeral Mass will be held on March 4th also at St. Peter’s followed by a burial at Eden Brook Cemetery. Because of COVID, attendance is sadly limited to immediate family. A live stream will be available through the link below for both the Prayer Service at 5:00pm on Wednesday March 3, 2021 and for the Funeral Mass at 1:00pm on Thursday, March 4, 2021.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society is suggested.
