Kyriakos (Charlie) Tsakos of Calgary passed away peacefully at home at the age of 78, with his family by his side, on Monday, January 13, 2026. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Anastasia; his sons, Theodore and Michael; his daughter, Demetria; his daughters-in-law, Adrienne and Cynthia; and his grandchildren, Anastasia, Nathan, and Everett. He is also survived by his sister, Irene Haritakis; his nephews, Demetri and Theodore; and extended family in Calgary, and Chania, Greece.
Kyriakos was born in Chania, Crete, in 1947. At the age of 16, he joined the Greek Merchant Navy and traveled the world before settling in Montreal, Canada, where he met Anastasia and began his family. In 1972, the family moved to Calgary, which became their home and the community to which he dedicated his working life.
He built his legacy through nearly 40 years of owning and operating restaurants. Proud of his Cretan heritage, he instilled the values of hard work, loyalty, and family in those around him. His love of Crete was reflected in his deep involvement with the Cretan Society of Calgary, where he served as president for more than a decade.
Charlie was a beloved brother, father, and devoted friend to all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made out to the Cretan Society of Calgary, via cheque.
Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers at Evan J. Strong Funeral Services North (3625 12 Street NE) on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at 7:00 pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Vladimir's Ukrainian Orthodox Sobor (404 Meredith Rd NE) on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at 10:00 am.
