The Rider Nation Has Lost One of Its Biggest Fans

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ken Seiferling, who passed away peacefully on June 21, 2026, at the Arthur J.E. Child Cancer Centre in Calgary after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, on July 28, 1953, Ken moved to St. Victor with his family at the age of four. At eighteen, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the Canadian Forces. Over the next thirty years, his military career took him across Canada and around the world, with postings in Moosonee, Dana, Baldy Hughes, North Bay, Winnipeg, Thule, Greenland, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and Vandenberg, California. He retired with pride after three decades of dedicated service.

Retirement from the military did not mean slowing down. After settling in Calgary, Ken continued working in a variety of roles, including school bus driver, truck driver, Canada Post delivery driver, and airport security officer with the Commissionaires. No matter where life took him, he became known for his friendly smile, strong work ethic, and ability to make people feel welcome.

In 2018, Ken embraced retirement and the simple pleasures that brought him joy. He took great pride in his lawn and garden, spent countless hours exploring the world through his flight simulator, enjoyed crafting beer and wine, relaxed in his hot tub, and eagerly anticipated winters in Yuma, Arizona. And through it all, he remained fiercely loyal to his beloved Saskatchewan Roughriders, never missing an opportunity to cheer them on.

Ken leaves behind the love of his life and his best girl, Kim, his devoted wife of 37 years; his sons, Russell (Meg) and Justin (Jen); his cherished grandson, Jace; and honorary grandson, Seth. He will also be lovingly remembered by his sister Patricia Olson (Ron), his brother Jamie Seiferling (Sheila), his sister Laureen Hone (Patrick), his brother-in-law Gary Boechler and his sister-in-law Lori Hansen, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents Edythe and Peter Seiferling and his parents-in-law Lois and Jim Holtom; his brother Herbert Seiferling, sister Janice Boechler and brother-in-law Kevin Hansen.

While Ken's accomplishments were many, his greatest legacy was the way he cared for others. Fiercely protective of Kim and endlessly proud of his family, he expressed his love through everyday acts of kindness. He was the neighbour who quietly cleared driveways after a snowfall before anyone had the chance to ask. Guests rarely left his home empty-handed, often departing with a bottle of homemade wine and a story worth retelling.

Giving back came naturally to Ken. As a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society, he transported patients to and from appointments, valuing the conversations as much as the opportunity to help. When cancer touched his own family, he devoted months to driving his sister to treatments in San Diego and later supported his daughter-in-law through her cancer treatments in Ontario. Compassion was not something Ken practiced occasionally—it was simply who he was.

Many will remember Ken for the pocket candy he always seemed to have on hand. Whether you had just won a game of darts or pool, or he simply thought you could use a little pick-me-up, he would offer a sweet treat with a smile. It was a small gesture, but one that perfectly reflected his generous spirit and his gift for brightening someone's day.

His home was always open, his stories somehow improved with every retelling, and his laughter had a way of making everyone feel like they belonged. Ken possessed a rare ability to turn friends into family and ordinary moments into cherished memories. Whether serving his country, helping a neighbour, or caring for those he loved, he lived a life defined by service, generosity, humour, and unwavering devotion to others.

A memorial tribute celebrating Ken's life will be held on August 8, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ken's memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.

And so, the next time you cheer for the Riders, lend a hand to a neighbour, share a bottle of wine with a friend, or discover an unexpected piece of candy in your pocket, think of Ken and smile. His was a life well lived, a heart generously shared, and a presence that will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
