Joseph "Ray" Gosselin Obituary

Joseph Marcel Raymond Gosselin passed away peacefully on July 27 at the South Health Campus in Calgary.

Ray was born to Delia (Brouilette) and Edgar Gosselin, on February 16, 1946 in Montreal, Quebec. He was the fourth child of seven siblings. Ray leaves behind his older brother, Real (Pierrette); his sister Carmen; younger brother, Normand (Susan); and two younger sisters, Carole and Rachel. He was predeceased by his parents, his oldest brother, Claude, who passed away in 2009 as well as his stepdaughter Dawn who passed away in 1994.

Ray’s siblings recall that he loved to read when he was younger. After graduating from high school Ray began working for Canada Metal. In the fall of 1981, Ray was working for Canada Metal in Toronto when he was transferred to Calgary to run a new state of the art "zero emission" furnace. While in Calgary he met Faye (Vivian Faye Staudinger) and they were married November 13, 1982. Ray had an instant family with Faye’s two children, Dawn and Dean. Ray became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in June of 1984. The couple were later sealed in the Cardston temple on April 12, 1986. On January 3, 1987 a horrible accident occurred that brought another child into Ray's life. Two and a half year old Nicholas was the only survivor of a car accident involving Faye’s sister Cheryl and her family. Nicky suffered severe brain damage from the accident and needed constant care. Nicky was for Ray, the greatest joy he could ever receive. Nicky was the most important person in Ray’s life.

In May of 1999 the family moved to Okotoks where Ray lived until 2019. Ray loved to sing. For years Ray volunteered as a caroler at Heritage Park for the 12 Days of Christmas. He was also part of the Big Rock Singers and the Dutch Canadian Choir. Ray also loved to help people through his church service and other areas of his life. He was a Rotarian for many years as well as an executive committee member of Chrysalis, a day home for handicapped adults where Nicky attended for many years.

For the last number of years while Ray was living in Calgary he was befriended by a wonderful circle of people who cared for him allowing him to feel peace with the challenging circumstances of his life. In the end, Ray suffered from terminal cancer. He was well cared for by the excellent staff at the South Health Campus to whom we are forever grateful.
