Joseph "Joe" Murphy Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father and granddad, Joseph Edward Murphy (Joe) on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the age of 85. He passed away peacefully in his home with his wife by his side.

Predeceased by his parents, Francis and Florence (Squires) Murphy; brothers, Donald, and William Murphy; sister Mary (Kavanagh); sisters-in-law, Judy (Byrne), Joyce (Walters), and Isabel (Martin) Barron; and brothers-in-law, Larry Horan, and Joseph Kavanagh.

Leaving to mourn him is his loving wife of 56 years, Catherine (Lacey); his sons, Michael (Amanda), Sean (Kelly), Brian, and Dan (Katie); and daughter Kerry (Carl) Heywood; eight treasured grandkids, Jack, Kyla, Xavier, Brianne, Liliana, Nolan, Mara and Declan. Also left to mourn are his brothers, Kevin (Audrey), Frank (Bea), Mike, and Dave; and his sisters, Gert Horan, and Joan (Doug) Aspell. He also leaves behind sisters-in-law, Mabel Murphy, Agnes (Stephen) Benoit, Joan (Joe) Royle, Doris Murphy, Mary (Bob) Squires, and Rosemary (Ron) Boydston; and brothers-in-law, Ed (Pearl) Lacey, and Jim (Anne) Lacey.

Joe was born and raised in St. John’s Newfoundland. He was a natural athlete and excelled at hockey, winning the Boyle Trophy as a member of St. Pat’s in 1960. He also played for the St. John’s Caps coached by Howie Meeker. His love for golf started at Bally Haly Golf and Country Club in St. John’s where he caddied as a teenager.

He left Newfoundland to attend St. John’s University in New York. In 1964, he joined the United States Air Force. He trained and worked as a meteorologist, serving on bases in the US and Germany over 20 years. He represented the USAF in numerous golf tournaments from Pebble Beach California to Panama City Florida. He always said a hole-in-one is luck, not skill, and he was lucky enough to have three!

Joe was a loving faithful husband! He adored his wife and the life they shared together. They travelled all over Europe when he was in the military and continued to travel after retirement. His favourite places to visit were California, Vegas, Cape Cod and trips “home” to the Rock. Family always came first.

Joe was an amazing, devoted father. He loved being a dad and hanging out with the family - playing baseball, hockey, golfing, skating, bowling and of course a good game of cards. He was a favourite among kids in the neighborhood who rang the bell and asked if Mr. Murphy could come out to play. He passed on his love of music to his children, singing all the favourites in the old station wagon. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, which often included the application of duct tape. He was always there when needed.

Joe was also a wonderful granddad! He loved playing with the grandkids, watching their sporting games and giving them big hugs. On the day his first grandchild was born, he went out and bought him a basketball, saying “with those long fingers he is going to be a basketball player”. At two, he bought him golf clubs. He was always in charge of pushing the stroller. He made sure there were plenty of treats on hand when they came to visit no matter what time of day it was.

He will always be remembered for his soft-spoken voice, sweet smile, kindness, and greeting “Hello Ducky”. We will miss his playful side, his mischievous smile, teasing, and quick wit. He was a huge fan of horse races and was always ready for a game of cards!

We were so lucky to have him in our lives and proud to be his family.
