John (Jack) Sedgwick Obituary

Sedgwick, John (Jack) Ambrose – September 17, 1935 – September 15, 2021. On September 15, 2021 Jack passed away peacefully with daughter Charlene at his side at the Southwood Hospice in Calgary, AB.

Jack is survived by two daughters, Catherine, Charlene (Darren) Dorey and three sons, Gary (Monique), James and Dale. He also leaves to mourn his six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; his sisters Donna and Marion, his brother Len (Bev), his brother-in-law Ivan (Yvonne); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of fifty-nine years Elsie, his son, Michael David; parents Hattie and Delbert; sisters-in-law Betty Saskiw, Bev Sedgwick, Lillian Fuyarchuk; and brothers-in-law Emil Fuyarchuk and Marshall Saskiw.

Born in the midst of the Great Depression in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Jack spent his childhood in Humboldt. In his youth, Jack was an avid hockey player known as ‘Satchmo’ to his teammates and laced up the skates into his early thirties.

He met his beloved Elsie in 1958 Winnipeg, they married in December 1959. He spent most of his working life as a banker, first with the Bank of Nova Scotia and later toward the end of his career with the Federal Business Development Bank. He enjoyed the camaraderie and volunteerism with the Rotary Club, Catholic Church and Alberta Winter Games.

Jack enjoyed landscaping at his home in Grande Prairie, planting trees and bushes everywhere. With wife Elsie, he spent countless hours playing cards, gardening and cross-country skiing. He delighted in playing with his grandchildren. Later in life, visitors to his home will recall with fondness visiting with him while he enjoyed the comfort of his favourite chair and his warm hospitality to his children and grandchildren.

The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to Laurie (Senior Care Advocate) and the staff of the Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Grande Prairie, where Jack spent the bulk of his last 3 months.
