John Hutchinson Obituary

We, as John’s kids, would like to share with you that our Dad has gone Home to be with His Heavenly Father.

Dad was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and was keen on hiking, mountain climbing, fishing and hunting. After graduating from Berean Bible College, he married Reta, and they pastored a church in Longview, Alberta, along with caring for the Stony People in Morley. Over the years, he remained good friends with the Wesley family and many others. The Stony People held a very special place in his heart.

Two years later God called them and their young family to spend ten years in India under Youth for Christ International, working with high school and university students. On their return to Canada in 1966, Dad worked with Canada Youth for Christ as a youth evangelist.

After a few years, Dad and Mom began a ministry with home prayer groups and Bible studies in Calgary. He pastored Melos Fellowship for several years. As well, he was on the pastoral staff at Grace Vineyard Fellowship. Then an invitation came for Dad to teach in a Bible school as the Dean of Students. One of his teachings, that touched many of the students lives, ended up being the foundation of his first book. Dad served as the Director of the Calgary Concerts of Prayer for 10 years and served as chaplain at Entheos Retreat Centre for 10 years.

In their latter years, Dad and Mom loved being a part of the U Church family. Dad became “Papa John” or “Grandpa John” to so many! It was during this time that Dad published three books that have blessed so many people.

One of Dad’s greatest loves, that truly fed his spirit, was time spent in his precious mountains beside his favorite campfire. The place he found closest to Heaven was Lake O’Hara. He and Mom always treasured their time there!

We'd like to say a special thank you to all the '3 South' staff at Bethany Calgary. Your love and respect for our Dad has been deeply appreciated.

We were blessed to have him as our Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa. Thank you, Dad, for “marking the trail well!”

Due to the recent Covid restrictions, a graveside service will be held for immediate family only on May 8, 2020. Your love and prayers will be deeply appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Emmanuel Ministries Calcutta (http://emcalcutta.org/support.html).
