Joan was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
At age 19, she married Oscar whose medical training took them to London, England following which they returned to Canada and settled in Weyburn, Saskatchewan for over 30 years, raising their family and making many dear friends. They retired to Calgary, Alberta to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Joan enjoyed a long and happy marriage to Dr. Oscar Decter who passed away January 26, 2009. They shared a passion for their large family, family driving vacations, playing duplicate bridge and watching football. Joan always put her family first while still managing to read voraciously, watch all the new movies and knit complicated sweaters. She brought a great deal of wisdom, good judgment and common sense to bear throughout her life. Joan will always be remembered fondly and greatly missed.
She is survived by her younger sister Rhoda (Jim) of Vancouver, B.C., her five children; Ross (Karen) of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Ellen of Freeport, Bahamas, Hal of Victoria, B.C., Marcia (Malcolm) of Danville, California and Jeff (Dali) of Calgary, her seven grandchildren; Alex (Erin), Tanner, Taylor, Rachel, Greer, Ilaina (Kailey) and Sean, and great grandchildren, Alexa (Joey), Peyton, and Ava, and great-great granddaughter, Lilith. Joan also leaves behind many loving relatives and wonderful friends.
We are most grateful to the doctors, nurses, aides and staff at the Peter Lougheed Centre who made Joan's last days comfortable in spite of the challenging times.
At Joan’s request, there will be no funeral service.
