Joan Frances MacDonald

It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Frances MacDonald (nee Barron), a loving wife, devoted mother, much loved grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. After a courageous battle with cancer, Joan passed away peacefully on September 10, 2019 with her children by her side.

Joan was predeceased by John, her beloved husband of 65 years, her parents, two brothers, and one granddaughter. She is survived by her five children, Greg (Carole), Diane (Doug), Karen (Rick), Mary-Jo (Cary) and Chris (Dominique); five grandchildren, Stephanie, Marc, Alec, Angelique and David; four great grandchildren; two sisters (Catherine and Patricia); and many nieces and nephews.

Joan was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, the youngest of five children. She married John in 1954 and proceeded to devote her life to him and their children. Joan loved spending time with her family and always took a great interest in their lives and well-being. She was the heart of the family. She will be remembered as a woman of great character, integrity and unwavering faith; always ready to support with a prayer or a quiet act of kindness.

Over the years, Joan enjoyed working various part time jobs and volunteering for many activities and events. She loved to travel and enjoyed wonderful family road trips throughout North America. She was an avid reader, loyal Blue Jays fan and lifelong music lover.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the teams of nurses, doctors and support staff at Palliative Home Care, South Health Campus, Foothills Hospital, Nurse Next Door, and the Foothills Country Hospice. They tirelessly and lovingly cared for our Mom over the last 9 months and their kindness and compassion will always be remembered.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gerard's Catholic Church (8944 Elbow Drive SW) on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 11:00am with the Rev. Ignatius Tran presiding. Reception to follow in St. Gerard’s Parish Hall.
