Jim Spiropoulos passed away peacefully on January 3, 2026, at the age of 96. Born in Kastraki, Corinthias, Greece, Jim was the second of five children. In 1948, Jim left his village to find better opportunities in Calgary. Arriving in Montreal, he often recounted phoning his uncle in Calgary to pick him up and at that moment discovering how large Canada is. Typified by drive, resilience, and courage, Jim built his legacy. He opened a small coffee shop and then Spiros Pizza, a Calgary establishment that he was most proud of and is still run by his niece and her family to this day. Jim built his family in tandem with his businesses, including bringing his two sisters and brother to Calgary. Once retired, he and his wife Evangeli enjoyed splitting their time between Calgary and Greece for many years.
Jim will be forever remembered by his wife, Evangeli, daughter Angelina, sons Demetry (Georgia) and Evangelos (Julianna), granddaughters Genya (Brendan), Smaragda (Brendan), Athina (Andrew), and Sophia, grandsons James and John, great-granddaughters Ella and Enza, sister Zoe and many nieces and nephews in Canada, the U.S. and Greece. He was preceded in death by his brothers Yiannis and Constandinos and sister Christina. The family would also like to thank Alana, Kateryna, Larissa and the staff in Unit 72 of the Rockyview Hospital, who helped care for Jim and made his final months more comfortable.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 10:00 am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) with Graveside Service to follow at Eden Brook Memorial Gardens. Immediately following the Graveside Service, family and friends are invited for coffee at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation.
