James (Jim) Michael Schwetz of Calgary passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at the age of 84 years.
Jim was born on August 14, 1940, in Lac Du Bonnet Manitoba to Michael Schwetz and Pauline Schwetz (Ogrodnik). One of 5 children, Jim grew up and went to school in Dryden Ontario. Always a hard worker and excellent at saving, Jim sold his car and managed to attend United College (now the University of Winnipeg) for one year, with the goal of being a dentist. Without additional funds, Jim left school and went to work in banking. Eventually he moved into the appraisal division, a job he did for the rest of his career.
In 1965 he met and married Shirley Schwetz (Seeger) and settled down in London, Ontario where they had 2 children, Leslie (Scott) and Lorne (Amber). In 1981 Jim moved the family to Calgary and fell in love with the city. The mountains soon cast their spell and he took skiing lessons, enjoying his time in the mountains.
If you knew Jim, you knew a very funny man who was always friendly and welcoming. Jim loved to ski, play bridge and spend time with his grandchildren, Tyler (Jessica), Spencer (Brianna), Matthew (Allie), Ethan, Curtis (Freddie), Sean and great-granddaughter Penelope.
Jim was never far from a cribbage board and he was always ready to teach a newcomer or threaten to “kick your butt” to a rival.
Jim’s laugh, quick wit and positive attitude will be missed but not forgotten.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Inn on Officers' Garden (150 Dieppe Drive SW) on Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 1:00 with a reception to follow.
