James Schmit Obituary

James Edward Schmit, aged 88, passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Born on June 10, 1937, in Hardin, Montana, Jim’s early life was shaped by both challenge and promise. After the passing of his father when he was just 11 years old, his family relocated to Miles City, Montana. There, Jim distinguished himself as an exceptional student and athlete, graduating high school as an All-American in both football and academics.

Driven by a deep spiritual calling, Jim entered the Jesuit order in Oregon following high school. He dedicated twelve years to religious study and formation with the Jesuits before discerning a different path prior to being ordained. During this time and through subsequent studies at Gonzaga University and Regis College in Toronto, Jim earned multiple degrees: a Bachelor of Arts in Honours Classical Studies, a Bachelor of Arts in Theology, a Master of Arts in English Literature, and a Licentiate in Philosophy.

Jim began his teaching career at Jesuit High School in Oregon where he taught English and Latin. After leaving the Jesuit order, he moved to Toronto to attend Regis College and spent three years counseling inmates at the Don Jail—an experience that reflected his enduring compassion and commitment to service.

In 1969, Jim moved west to Calgary where he began a long and impactful tenure at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School. There he taught English, Latin, and Social Studies until his retirement in 1996. His passion for classical languages continued well into retirement as he taught Latin at St. Mary’s University for another fifteen years.

Beyond the classroom, Jim was deeply involved in athletics throughout his life. He played and coached football, basketball, cross-country running, slo-pitch softball and canoeing—activities that reflected both his love of sport and mentorship. For two decades he also served as a referee with the Calgary Football Officials Association, bringing fairness and integrity to every game.

A devout lifelong Catholic, Jim’s faith was central to his identity. His abiding love of God guided him through all aspects of life; he lived with clarity of purpose and unwavering devotion.

In 1970, Jim married Geri in Calgary—union that would become the cornerstone of his personal life for over five decades. He is survived by his beloved wife Geri, his sister Mary Margaret (Dede) Plank, nieces Amy Plank and Tomasine Scott; nephews Jim Plank and Daniel Scott and Geri’s large loving family. He was preceded in death by his parents Virginia and Bernard Schmit; his sisters Shirley and Teresa, his nephew David Scott and his brother Tom.

A man of intellect, faith, discipline, and heart—Jim left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to know him as teacher, mentor, colleague or friend.

If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Operation Smile Canada at www.operationsmile.ca. or a charity of their choice.

May Jim’s memory be a blessing to all who knew him. A Funeral Mass will be held at St Gerard's Church (8944 Elbow Drive SW., Calgary) on November 1, 2025, at 11:00 am followed by a reception in the St. Gerard's Parish Hall.
