Ingrid Lanting Obituary

Ingrid Joyce Lanting received her heart’s greatest desire on August 11, 2024 when she went to see the face of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus. Surrounded by family and in the arms of her dear husband, Ingrid parted this world in peace, 8 short weeks after her cancer diagnosis. Why the Lord took her when in the prime of her life, only the Lord knows. We had fervently prayed that He would heal her, but she is now finished with cancer and pain. She ran a great race of faith, and she will be deeply missed by all.

Born to Dutch Immigrants (Albert and Johanna), Ingrid was raised in Calgary and was the youngest of six children: John (Nellie, both of whom preceded her in death), Henry (Joanne), Linda (Neil), Edwin (Barb), and Richard (Linda). She attended Central Memorial High School and Calvin College, and she was raised in what was formerly known as First Christian Reformed Church. Always a believer, Ingrid’s faith was challenged and etched deeper on her heart during her teenage years when her father took a stand for the Reformed faith in a pivotal time in their Church. This would prove to be a theme for her life, as Ingrid was always serving and giving her heart and life to serve Christ through serving His Church.

In 1983, Ingrid met Frank, the love of her life, as she attended Calvin College. A year later, on August 17, 1984, the two were married and enjoyed 40 love-filled years together. Their wedding text was the theme of their marriage: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). In their early marriage years, they did tent-making ministry while remodeling houses on the side. This too would be a theme throughout their lives, as there was always a new project to be done; a kitchen to be remodeled, a wall to paint, or a deck to be built. The two of them made a great team, as Frank was the builder and Ingrid the designer. Ingrid loved to decorate, she was endlessly creative, not simply in home décor but in planning and hosting parties for every occasion and birthday and especially at their cabin in Sandpoint, Idaho. Frank always says, “Ingrid brought the colour to his rather drab, ‘off-white’ life.”

After their wedding, they moved to Bellingham, WA where Frank served as a Youth Pastor for 1 year. After that, they moved to Anacortes where their family was completed with three sons: Christopher (Nicole. Children: Haylee, Adrian, Mariah, Nevada, and Sierra), Jonathan (Breanne. Children: Liam, AllieAnne, and Kayden), and Bryan (Sydney. Children: Lucille and William). Ingrid treasured her children and grandchildren. To them she was not simply a mother; she was a great friend. Ingrid also served as a faithful pastor’s wife in Anacortes CRC, as her bright personality brought life and light to the dreary Washington skies, especially as her humor and laugh were infectious. Ingrid’s creativity is still on display in the church building through various remodel projects, and she brought joy through many fellowship events and Bible Studies. She always had a heart to lead Women’s Bible Studies through her years of ministry, following an inductive method of reading the Scriptures verse by verse while applying them to the heart. It was through her care and teaching that Ingrid impacted countless lives, including her daughters-in-law and the women who served her in love during the final weeks of her life.

In 1992, the Lantings were called to Ingrid’s hometown of Calgary, where in 25 years they served 2 churches, Woodgreen PCA and Gospel of Grace Community Church. Her life was deeply changed in the year 2000 when she and Frank went through a Bible Study called Sonship, also known as Gospel Transformation. She was impacted with the deep beauty and power of the gospel like never before. What became her theme verse even until the end, was Galatians 3:5-6, “So again I ask, does God give you His Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard? So also Abraham ‘believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.’” Her desire to see Jesus and His Word brought to life in herself and others drove her to get her Master of Arts in Counseling through Providence Theological Seminary. There, she combined her scholarly mind with her love of serving the Church. Her impact through counseling was enormous, not simply in who she counseled but in shaping the lives of those who surrounded her. For a number of years, she had a phone ministry where she counseled clients mostly in Ontario and on the East Coast. Ingrid was never one who enjoyed small talk, which meant that most conversations became deep, talking about heart issues and how to bring these before the Saviour. Those who loved her could only love her deeply, as she was both a rock and a safe place.

The twilight years of Frank and Ingrid’s ministry were spent in Nobleford CRC where they made good friends and continued to minister. Ingrid also took that time to invest her life in her grandchildren, adoring them as they adored her. With great sadness, we therefore say goodbye to a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and a true friend. Ingrid would drop anything to be there for anyone who called. Her ministry was expansive, her prayers were powerful, and her personality brought joy and life wherever she went. She was eager to once again see her mother and especially her father in heaven. And in the hope of Jesus’ return and the resurrection of the dead, we long to see her again too. We will see her again in Glory!

For the last few years, Ingrid was involved as an Online Counsellor through the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association called “Search for Jesus.” There she had lots of opportunity to share her love of and faith in Christ.
