Immaculata Shui Thau Hiew

Our dear beloved mother Immaculata Shui Thau Hiew sadly passed away on September 24, 2022, at the age of 96 in Wing Kei Greenview nursing home with her family by her side. We know she is now in a much better place with Jesus.

Immaculata was born in Sandakan, Sabah East Malaysia on March 6, 1926. She lost her parents especially her father to the Japanese invasion during the second world war. She lived with her large extended family until after the war was over. Immaculata met and married her husband while teaching in Tenom, Sabah. She raised six children, having four sons, and two daughters; one died at age three.

Immaculata had a passion for music, loved to sing, and played the piano. Besides being busy raising her children, she volunteered for a local church teaching catechism and bible studies for new Catholics.

Immaculata immigrated to Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada in 1981 to be with her daughter. During her time living in Fort McMurray, she taught Chinese to elementary children. She later moved to Calgary and became a member of Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Church and joined the Legion Of Mary. Immaculata always had a strong bond with God and her faith stayed with her until the end.

Immaculata loved to sing old songs to the residents and nursing stuff on her floor while living in the nursing home. They all enjoyed her singing and praised her after.

Our mother is survived by her five children, Joseph (Betty), Jacoba (Alex), Philip (Glenda), John (Helen), James (Li Hua); grandchildren, Benedict (Dianna), Dominic (Tianna), Raymond (Elaine), Jessica (Johnathan), Phoebe (Toby), Frederick, Nicholas, Athena; great-grandchildren Kayden, Xander, Flynn, and Greyson. She is predeceased by her husband, daughter, and her adopted brother.

We like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the volunteers at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Father Nguyen, and Deacon Edward.

Immaculata will be greatly missed by her family and we will always cherish fond memories of her. 

A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church on Monday, October 3, 2022, at 11:00am.
