Hugo Anthony Meynell

Hugo Anthony Meynell PhD, FRSC, aged 85, Calgary, died peacefully at the Brentwood Care Centre on October 1 from lung cancer. Born to Sophia Patricia (Jill) and Godfrey Meynell, VC, MC, on March 23, 1936 at Meynell Langley, Derbyshire, he is survived by his three children, Clare F Meynell, MBE, Julian James Meynell, Letitia Mercia Meynell, his grandson, Simon Meynell, and Letitia’s partner, Andrew Fenton. His daughter, Frances Minto, died earlier this year. He is also survived by his brother, Godfrey Meynell, MBE of Meynell Langley.

Educated at Eton College to which, like his father, he won a scholarship, and King’s College, Cambridge, Hugo taught Theology, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds and the University of Calgary. He published numerous books, articles, and book reviews on topics ranging from arguments for the existence of God, to ethics, theory of knowledge, the good of art, and Handelian opera. A talented pianist and organist, Hugo had a lifelong love of music and was an avid reader.

Hugo’s body will be cremated. Friends are welcome to join the family for a mass on Thursday, October 14 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in person (masking and social distancing required) or online at 11 am MST/6 pm BST with live-streaming* available through the link below.

Hugo’s family would like to thank the staff at the Brentwood Care Centre (West Hillhurst) for their excellent care and compassion through what has been an extraordinarily difficult time.
