Hugh Van Bavel Obituary

Hugh Adrian Van Bavel, beloved husband of Shirley, passed away on November 22, 2025, at the age of 89. He was predeceased by his parents, Kathleen and John, and his brothers, Herman and Gordon. Born and raised on a farm just outside the town of Strathmore, Alberta, he was surrounded by a large extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. This early part of his life would become the source for many stories to be told, over and over; with each telling, and with a twinkle in his eye, there would often be a new and interesting embellishment. In the 1958, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Roberts. They moved shortly thereafter to Calgary and soon started a family. Hugh was the loving father of daughter Rhonda (Darrel) sons Gregory (Kelly), and Paul. Grandfather to Nadine (Mica), Chris (Stefanie), Alysha, Adrian, and Cassidy. Great grandfather to Taylor, Camille, and Julian. He will also be remembered by his nieces, nephews, and cousins. He worked as an electrical draftsman for Calgary Power, into his late forties. Following that, he ventured off on his own to begin and run a sign painting company. After letting the sign business run its course he moved back into drafting, lending his expertise to several different companies. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years before his retirement. During retirement, Hugh and Shirley spent their time puttering around the house, dabbling in different hobbies, and traveling to visit friends and family. Anyone who showed up on his doorstep was warmly welcomed into his home. Hugh loved to tinker with various projects and to spend time out in the garden in the sunshine with Shirley. Hugh will be remembered as an amazing father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always cared deeply for his family and friends and always brought positive light and laughter wherever he went with his infectious smile. He has left a lifetime of wonderful memories and experiences in all those he has met, and his memory and stories will live on for many years to come.
