Hon-Cheung Lau was born on September 23, 1940, in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. He was the fourth of thirteen siblings. In Guangzhou, his parents ran a dairy farm and a business selling dairy products. At the age of thirteen, Hon-Cheung and his second brother, Joseph, began delivering milk by bicycle to ice cream parlors and customers before school, starting their routes in the early mornings. In 1958, Hon-Cheung officially began working as a plumber and mechanical repairman at the Guangzhou Toy factory.
He married his high school sweetheart, Bo-Yung, on August 2, 1965, and this year marks their sixtieth wedding anniversary. He will be forever remembered by his two daughters (Rebecca and Li), two grandsons (Alan and Anlon), one granddaughter (Cynthia) and one great-granddaughter (Eleni).
On January 13, 1982, Hon-Cheung immigrated from Guangzhou to Calgary, Canada. He worked in restaurants and plastic manufacturing plants before becoming a self-employed home renovator. A trade he continued until his retirement.
On September 8, 2022, Hon-Cheung underwent surgery for lung cancer. By God’s grace, blessing, and the prayers of his church community, he remained remarkably healthy until August 18, 2025, when he was hospitalized with pneumonia. After nine days of care, he passed away peacefully on August 27, 2025, surrounded by many friends and family.
Hon-Cheung lived a life full of integrity and selflessness. He expressed his love for the church openly, often did good deeds, remained loyal to his friends and family, and never held grudges. These qualities reflected his father’s virtue of forbearance. Whenever he faced difficulties, he received support from relatives and friends — kindness for which he remained eternally grateful.
