Harry Emil Jaeger

December 10, 1926 ~ July 21, 2021 (age 94)

Harry (Emil) Jaeger of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2021, at the age of 94 years.

Harry was born in Dortmund, Germany in 1926, and was drafted into military service at the age of 16. Fortunately, he was soon captured and survived the war in a POW camp in England. While in England he learned English, which would prove to serve him well. After the war, once back in Germany, he secured his trade papers as a butcher. In 1956 he met the love of his life, Ursula, and they were soon married, at which point they made the decision to move to Canada.

Establishing themselves in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Harry joined the ranks at Algoma Steel Corporation, where he eventually worked his way into management. Life in the Sault brought four kids, and a love for the wonderful Ontario outdoors, especially fishing! In 1979, Harry accepted a promotion and transferred out to Calgary to be a part of the Algoma Quality Control team. It was a big move for Ursula and the family, but Harry believed Calgary offered a better future. This man knew steel and had developed an international reputation for his expertise, particularly in the area of rails. He worked tirelessly as a Customer Service rep, but always with patience and a kind demeanor. He did great work for Algoma and customers alike. Clients always loved dealing with Harry, as he responded to issues promptly, came up with solutions, and expertly solved problems.

A long and successful career at Algoma came to an end with retirement in 1991, leaving a lot of time for Harry and Ursula to go to their most favorite destination in the whole world – Hawaii – and they went plenty!  This was definitely their little bit of paradise and the source of hundreds of fond memories.  Additionally, Harry loved to entertain – especially if it involved a steak BBQ in his always-meticulous backyard.  All will agree that he was the consummate host – always having a tray with Caesars or German beer at the ready.

While Harry and Ursula remained in close contact with greatly-missed friends and family in Sault Ste Marie, new friendships were made in Calgary which have endured these many years.  Karl and Annie, Werner and Hanna, Jack and Liz, Helena and Theo, Ed and Myrna – were some of the couples who came to mean so very much to Harry and Ursula.

Harry leaves behind his beloved wife of 65 years, Ursula, and his grown children, Thomas (Gloria), Frank (Rosie), Susan (Dave), and Claudia (Sean).  Missing him dearly are his grandchildren: Tommy, Timmy, Alecia, Chloe, Alex, Isabel, Mary, Sarah, and Anna – as well as a growing list of great-grandchildren! Harry is also survived by his sister, Christel, in Thessalon, Ontario.

He was a wonderful husband, inspiring father and family patriarch, and an honest and decent man, who loved his family deeply, and was equally loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed but in our thoughts every day.

Ursula and the family would like to thank the staff at the Chinook Care Centre, and Rockyview Hospital (Unit 74) for their kindness and support.
