It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Gavros on September 1, 2025.
Harry was born on February 10, 1947, in Astros, Greece. He was the eldest of three children. In 1970, Harry moved to Canada to continue his education in welding and attended SAIT to further pursue his passion. After completing his studies, he gained valuable experience working in machine shops across Saskatchewan and Alberta. His original plan was to return to Greece and open his own machine shop.
In 1974, after saving enough money, Harry returned to Greece to marry the love of his life, Toula, his devoted wife of 51 years. Together, they moved back to Canada to build their life and family. After several years in the welding trade, Harry and Toula took on a new challenge as restaurant owners, where they worked side by side.
Harry had many interests. He loved reading philosophy, repairing anything in need of fixing, and spending time outdoors camping, fishing, and hunting. Known for his big personality, Harry was loud, charismatic, and always ready with a joke—often an inappropriate one. Those who knew him best will remember his storytelling, his infectious laugh, and his ability to bring joy to any gathering.
Above all, Harry loved being a Papou. He was deeply involved in helping raise his grandchildren, sharing his passions and knowledge with them, especially on their fishing trips together.
Harry leaves behind his loving wife, Toula, his children John (Kathi) and Patricia (Sig), his grandchildren Harre and Elliot, as well as his sisters and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and extended family. He will be remembered with love for his warmth, humor, and generosity of spirit.
A Funeral Service will be celebrated at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church (1 Tamarac Crescent SW) on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 10:00 am, a recording of the service is available below. Graveside Service to follow at Edenbrook Cemetery followed by a Reception in the St. Demetrios Parish Hall.
