Hans Jakubczyk Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Hans Jakubczyk, in Calgary, on Monday, November 27, 2023, at the age of 95 after living a full life.

Hans was born in Hindenburg, Germany on February 6, 1928. The son of a teacher, Hans developed his interest in learning and understanding the world around him. When he got older, Hans pursued an interest in farming, having found a large farm which was willing to take him on as an apprentice. These new skills would be put on hold however when Hans chose to immigrate to Canada. In 1953, Hans settled in Calgary where he met Elisabeth through their church, and they married in 1958. Hans then co-founded a trucking business based in Drumheller, and he and Elisabeth started building their family of three children - Paul, Annemarie, and Danny.

In 1965, Hans made his dream of farming come true by selling his trucking company and buying a farm in Enchant, AB, where he built a modern productive irrigational farm. Life on the farm was tough but also good and rewarding. It included bringing home “pets” and keeping them in the house; ducklings in the bathtub, fish in the sink in the mudroom, family skating on the pond, freedom to roam, and swimming in the canal with family and friends. Sadly, Elisabeth passed away in 1987, and with that loss Hans sold his farm and moved to Lethbridge to be closer to his daughter and her family.

In 1992, Hans moved to Calgary where he began the next stage of his life. This period included marrying Marlis in 1993, a family friend who also had become widowed; and becoming a second Dad and Opa to her children Martina, Mark, and Andrea and their families. This new blended family enjoyed many family dinners, visits, holidays, and weddings together which made Hans very happy. These years also included travel, reading whatever Hans could get his hands on, hosting “Oma Day” for the next generation of grandchildren, entertaining family and friends from Germany, enjoying classical music concerts, volunteering at St. Boniface Parish and singing in the church choir. Always a generous host, Hans let you know how much he appreciated your company. He was always reliable for a good story, often showing us his memory for details that left us in awe. Hans will forever be remembered as loyal, loving, generous, welcoming and kind. We were blessed to have Hans as a husband, Dad and Opa, and will carry his love and spirit with us always.

Hans was predeceased by Elisabeth; son, Paul; and his brother Günter (Gertrud). Left to cherish wonderful memories of Hans will be his wife Marlis; children, Annemarie (Terry) Clark, Danny, Martina (Rick) Galbos, Mark (Julie) Woitas, and Andrea (Ben) Tsui; grandchildren, Bryanna (Elliott) Patton, Shannon (Brody) Gader, Chris (Mallory) Wollin, Jeff (Emma) Wollin, Justin (Kassia) Wollin, Abby and Emily Woitas, and Brynn and Zach Tsui; great-grandchildren, Jayke, Luuk, Kipp, Makkoy, Rosalee, Kuyler, June, and Conrad. He is also survived by one brother Josef (Sieglinde); as well as nephews and nieces.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Boniface German Church (1923 Broadview Rd NW) on Monday, December 11, 2023, at 11:00 am, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Live-streaming of the service was recorded and the video can be watched below for those who were unable to attend in person.
